Hotel de Baak Seaside offers space for displaying special exhibitions by contemporary artists. Together with the artist, we arrive at a shared theme that connects the artworks, our location, and the learning processes that take place here. At the moment, we are hosting the exhibition ‘The Beauty of Disappearing’ by artist Tom van der Ouderaa.
In his work, Tom van der Ouderaa explores the beauty of disappearing. An apparent contradiction that forms the very core of his artistic fascination. The drawings shown at Hotel de Baak Seaside are part of the series Beach Finds, in which abandoned objects, shaped by nature and time, take center stage. This theme runs like a thread through his oeuvre. From landscapes in which nature slowly erases human traces to silent cityscapes and fragile coastal areas that are changing irrevocably. His drawings, often based on his own photographs and film stills, emerge from observation, memory, and wonder at the transience of the world around us.
"In my work, I try to make visible what is slowly disappearing. It is precisely in that process that I discover a special form of beauty. I am drawn to places, landscapes, and objects that bear the traces of time and show how everything is constantly changing. Capturing those moments is, for me, a way to reflect on what once was and what may soon no longer exist. My drawings are not an attempt to preserve something, but to draw attention to the fragility, poetry, and meaning of transience."
